L’Osteria enters Poland

L’Osteria, German-based Italian’s restaurants chain plans to enter the Polish market. The chain is already present in eight countries in Europe.


L’Osteria, a chain of Italian restaurants, which already operates over 120 outlets in Europe, plans to enter the Polish market. The chain is already present in eight countries in Europe. In the native Germany, France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the Netherlands and England.


The chain expands its premises in three concepts. These are both stand-alone restaurants with a car park and a playground for children, and restaurants located in the city centre with an area of nearly 450-600 m2. The chain plans to expand on new markets, including Poland, operated by franchisees.


This is not the first restaurant chain which entering the Polish market. Pesto Cafe chain announced similar plans in mid-2019. Pesto Cafe, a Ukrainian food chain is also developing a concept based on Italian cuisine. The chain has so far opened one store in Poland, in Warsaw’s Galeria Młociny.

Is there room for a big player on HoReCa market in Poland?

In 2018, the 10 largest chains generated an estimated 23% share in the HoReCa market, which shows that the market is still not consolidated. Currently the market is dominated by two retailers – McDonald’s and AmRest. They have the largest number of outlets, as well as the largest average revenues. The remaining typical players are only the background. However, there is still room for new players on the still dynamically growing market.


According to a survey carried out for the purposes of PMR’s report, HoReCa market in Poland 2019, in December 2018, when asked about the types of catering establishments which they lack on the market, the respondents revealed their sentiment to milk bars. 37% of respondents (more often people aged 55+ and from small households) pay attention to this type of premises. For about 30% of respondents, establishments with traditional Polish cuisine and establishments with exotic, oriental cuisines are the types of establishments which they lack in the market. The shortages of this type of premises are particularly noticeable in the case of inhabitants of villages and small towns, while inhabitants of the largest cities significantly less frequently indicate the demand for this type of premises.
