Dentistry has good prospects for the future

The value of the dental services market in Poland, defined as the value of sales of services of conservative dentistry, orthodontics and prosthodontics with implantology, amounted in 2020 to PLN 8.6bn (public and private segment). This represented a 24% year-on-year decline, according to the latest PMR report entitled “Dentistry services market in Poland 2021. Market analysis and development forecasts for 2021-2026”.

According to PMR, 2021 is proving to be a good year for this market, and this undoubtedly constitutes a reflection of higher demand for services of various kinds in comparison with 2020.

A beautiful smile will strengthen the market for longer

The dental services arena in Poland is one of the fastest-growing markets in Europe, mainly because it is dominated by private operators. However, the COVID-19 restrictions in the country last year necessitated the closure of many dental facilities for at least two months. In addition, some facilities operated only on an emergency basis during this time and limited the admission of patients to urgent cases.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland has, to some extent, turned the dental services market upside down. Nevertheless, some of the phenomena which grew more intense before the pandemic will continue to be relevant in the long term. One such trend, in our opinion, is the growing popularity of healthy and aesthetically pleasing teeth. Even and attractive teeth are becoming one of the indicators of social status. At present, aesthetic matters constitute the principal reason for wearing orthodontic braces. In recent years, we have observed a very high level of interest in services in this area, and this has been supported further by the macroeconomic environment. In 2020, this trend was halted temporarily by the ongoing pandemic. However, its strength is indicated by changes in patient behaviour as early as the first half of 2021.

Dental chairs under siege again

The survey carried out by PMR between 16 and 19 August 2021 on a representative sample of 1,006 adult Poles reveals patient behaviour in the changed circumstances and significant changes in the preferences of these patients in the context of using particular dental services.

Among the many important observations in the PMR survey, it is worthy of note that in the first half of 2021 there was a significant increase in the percentage of users of individual dental services in the country. For some services, the percentage of users in the first half matched that of 2020 as a whole. This indicates a “resurgence” on the market for dental services in Poland in comparison with the situation in 2020.
