Analysis of the Polish DIY market and development forecasts

We prepared an analysis of the finishing and building products market in Poland for a global DIY chain. As part of the project, among other things, we calculated the market value and prepared a 3-year growth forecast for the DIY market in Poland.

Objectives of project

For one of the leading DIY chains operating in the Polish market, we prepared an analysis of the market of renovation and finishing products, which helped the client in strategic planning of its future development.

The research aimed to:

    • Identification of growth prospects for the DIY market
    • Identification of the most promising distribution channels and product segments
    • competition monitoring
Project details

Based on a panel of 220 leading market players, PMR analysts and econometric modelling experts developed a model of the DIY market in Poland.

The model covered 9 distribution channels as defined by the client:

    1. Large DIY chains
    2. Non-chain stores
    3. Wholesalers
    4. Building depots
    5. Furniture and interior design chains
    6. Specialised chains
    7. Grocery stores
    8. Non-food discount stores
    9. Online sales.

In the case of companies operating in the omnichannel segment, we broke down sales into offline and online, using algorithms developed by PMR that took into account, among other things, the number of page views for individual websites and the findings of consumer surveys on the popularity of different e-stores.

Based on an analysis of each player’s offering, we also segmented each player’s product portfolio into main 19 product categories. Methods that were used when analysing the market players’ offers included:

  • store check (researchers’ visits in-store),
  • web scraping (competitive content analysis of market players’ websites).

By combining an econometric modelling process, carried out by the specialised team, with the industry knowledge of our market analysts, we also prepared 3-year growth forecasts for the renovation and finishing products market and its main distribution channels and product segments.

Having identified the key determinants in the market and in its various channels and segments, we developed a comprehensive data set representing this information. We then used it to calculate econometric models by means of multiple regression (least squares method) and selected the best ones in terms of statistical quality and consistency with market knowledge.

Result of the project

The client was provided with a matrix model of the market in an Excel spreadsheet, including the value of the renovation and building products market, broken down by distribution channel and product segment, for the years 2017-2021 and development forecasts for 2022-2024. The model form allows the client to work with the data, for instance, to make automatic recalculations after modifying the adopted parameters and to generate additional comparisons.

We also prepared a comprehensive report in the form of a presentation, which, in addition to the analysis of key data from the model, enables the client to identify main factors affecting the renovation and finishing products market, including the macroeconomic situation, the situation of the housing and loan market and the war in Ukraine. The report also features a detailed analysis of the biggest players in the Polish renovation and building products market.
